A project sponsored by Comune di Firenze, Grandi Stazioni S.p.A, concieved and coordinated by Fondazione Michelucci
On October 30, 1935 the new Fabbricato viaggiatori of Firenze Santa Maria Novella Station was inaugurated. The project is the successful outcome of the national competition of 1932, won by “Gruppo Toscano” formed by Nello Baroni, Pier Niccolò Berardi, Italo Gamberini, Sarre Guarnieri, Leonardo Lusanna, led by Giovanni Michelucci. A project that triggered a strong debate over the issue of modernity. Since then, the station dialogues with the surrounding urban fabric, with the people who live it and pass through, with the church of Santa Maria Novella. The station is linked with the church by its accentuated horizontality, as the designers explained, "with function and appearance of terminal, limit, in order the apse of the church unchallenged prevail in its monumental expression". The compact material, interrupted by the symbolic "waterfall glass", the contrast between essentiality of external materials and wealth of the interior ones, the extreme attention to details, along with the perfect distribution system, make the station the most celebrated masterpiece in the national and international architectural culture. A twentieth century Italian architectural heritage recognised masterpiece, acclaimed by Florentines as well as travelers. After eighty years, the Gruppo Toscano station by Michelucci, confirms itself as a fundamental vital urban element and the most important architectural legacy of the twentieth century in Florence. The Fondazione Michelucci promotes a series of initiatives to celebrate and enhance the role of SMN for its social, cultural and urban dimension, in which identity, memory, relationships, meeting, and also mobility, communication, strategic value, cultural heritage are expressed.
