location: San Pellegrino Terme, Italy

year: 2009

Restoring San Pellegrino to its former splendour of the early 20th century has been an intervention of high quality. We developed our ideas, with the intention of outlining a new horizon of possibilities for the complex, to arrive at the point of envisaging a project which could trigger a radical turning point in one’s perception of San Pellegrino, a kind of echo that could become a driving force and activate a series of initiatives, capable of inverting the negative tendency which currently characterises the area, and of generating a series of positive spin-offs around the territory. The decline of San Pellegrino is also due to the excessive development of bottling works in the immediate vicinity of the Hotels and Spa, a development which has taken away the magical aura which formerly characterised the place. Today, the decision to rethink and requalify the works area, with emphasis on the spa area, is the starting point for restoring San Pellegrino’s image of quality and attraction. Particular attention will be given to road networks with the aim of simplifying access ways and making for faster, more efficient travel. All this will help promote the new spa centre and develop a synergy among the various new elements such as the new Kursaal to be built where the former Casino was, attracting an increasing number of clientele. The new San Pellegrino will be a place that will find the charm that has always characterised it, a place where the interaction between architecture and landscape will contribute to enhancing the concepts of wellness, relaxation and leisure. A change of scale, perspectives and objectives, therefore, recreate the conditions for the rebirth of a place so rich in charm and history.
