location: Rigi Kaltbad, Switzerland

year: 2012

The village of Rigi Kaltbad, located at 1435 meters above sea level, can be reached by cableway from the village of Weggis on the shores of Lake Lucerne, or by a small railway which climbs up the mountain slopes from the village of Witznau. The natural scenery is extraordinary, with views to the lake below and the tops of the Central Alps on the horizon.
The project consists of two distinct parts. The arrangement of the village square, whose surface has be redesigned with areas in mineral and green islands surrounding eight skylights conceived like glass sculptures, surrounded by rest benches. The square extends horizontally from the cylindrical tower to the west (containing stairs and a lift to the cableway station) to the eastern side where it encounters the intermediate station of the train. The rearranged square forms an ample terrace overlooking the valley.
A spa centre has been built below this village square; it opens to the south with two floors above ground. The interior offers a wide range of spa services: from indoor swimming pools which extend to the outdoor space in the south-eastern corner to saunas, showers and a meditation room on the upper basement floor which communicates with the square above through the skylights.
The whole aggregate is faced with Duke White granite, which has been used both for the pavements and the walls of the areas and the pools. The ceilings are faced with natural maple wood. The project features a large wall with a sunscreen pattern, also this in ashlars in Duke White granite, on the side facing the valley.
