LEGO is building a new visitor center in the Danish city Billund. Next to the terraced building designed by the architects of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) three new public places are build. They aim to combine the cityscape with the new building and act as meeting points for tourists and locals. gruppe F won the open competition together with Arkitema, Niras and theActive Institute for designing the plazas. In 2017 construction will begin. The “Arrival Plaza”, the “City Plaza” and the “Creek Plaza” all have their own function. The “Arrival Plaza” is the primary entrance to the LEGO Center and is representative. The “City Plaza” is meeting point and a place for events and activities. On the “Creek Plaza” nature is the key element, with the newly renatured Billund Creek as main feature. Bright concrete surfaces inspired by the local quartz sand act as combining element. Furthermore playing in the cityscape is a repeating theme: sloped surfaces, displaced areas and rainwater fed water games appeal to the imagination and enhance the motor skills of young and old.
