TASK
Ten days of intensive program exploring the design possibilities of an approach based on architectural, environmental and economic knowledge. Students are invited to recognize the role of design in revitalizing underutilized open spaces and the creation of urban Parks for hybrid purposes.
The field of application of the design will be an industrial area located in Sintra area. The design tasks will involve proposals for three different development scenarios. These scenarios are characterized by the presence of different types of economic activities encompassing both rural and industrial areas.
SCENARIO 1
Residential Park with leisure activities and residual industrial activities – focus on residential use with a vocation towards elderly residence facilities.
SCENARIO 2
Leisure Park with economic activities including some industrial activities – focus on leisure activities.
SCENARIO 3
Industrial Park with leisure activities including leisure support facilities – focus on industrial activities.
In each area a previous large-scale analysis will define the functional program for the workshop’s design proposal that includes any typology which may serve the purpose.
The projects represent a free modification of the existing architectural complexes that today are falling into ruins or simply abandoned. However, it is not allowed the total demolition and reconstruction of the area. In fact, the idea is to find the least expressive transformation needed to respond to the required scenario.
The generic themes addressed here involve two questions: (1) How can we make an Urban Park as a place we want to live in? (2) What uses can be shared in a Park?
In synthesis: What is a public space?
